Dog Fence Layouts and Designs

The following video explains our top three layout design options: whole perimeter, two-zone, and backyard-only, as well as our solution for townhomes - the three-sided fence.

Below you will find images and brief explanations of our three most-popular layout design options: whole perimeter, two-zone, and backyard-only, as well as our solution for townhomes - the three-sided fence.

Whole Perimeter

With a whole perimeter layout, your pet can roam freely around the entire property. This is probably the most popular layout option.

Two-Zone

Above is another example of a whole perimeter layout, but notice that the sides of the home are pinched off. This creates two zones: a front and back zone. This gives you more control of how much freedom your pet receives. The only way for your pet to access either zone is through the home.

Backyard-Only

Backyard Only Option

This is another common layout, but probably the least used. This is a backyard only layout. The drawback to this design is that it does not effectively contain your pet if it were to run out a front door or garage. There is usually no savings to the customer with this design.  The most common misconception is customers think that because they are doing just the backyard, it should cost less to have installed. In fact, there is usually just as much wire to be installed with this option (if not more) as with any other layout. Since the wire begins and ends at the transmitter, the installation consists of two parallel wires, running approximately 3'-4' apart. The wire basically has to double-back to the transmitter. This can reduce your pets backyard freedom another 8' with this design.

Three-Sided Fence

Only certain types of terrain will work using the "Three-Sided Fence" method.

Over the years, we've installed dozens of these lesser known installations with great success. We've gained a tremendous amount of knowledge, specialized techniques, and the use of a high powered transmitter to complete your dog fence.  This installation method also should only be attempted where water tables are relatively low. Areas that are close to water are generally ideal for this type of installation. To install this type of layout, we will run your wire around the perimeter of the back yard, drive 2 - 8' ground rods below the surface of each back corner of the house, and connect your loop wire to each ground rod using ground rod clamps. It's actually an amazing way to get what you want out of your dog fence layout.
